Breakfast With Cloos - Kristian Haagen

Kristian Haagen is a name in the world of horology that needs no introduction. A pioneer within horological journalism, photographer, author, collector and much more. Kristian visited Christopher Cloos in our flagship store in Copenhagen as one of the first guests at Breakfast with Cloos. This journal dives into our favourite takeaways from the interview - Happy reading!

Kristian's passion for wristwatches goes back a long while. At just six years old, he started noticing the first pages of the National Geographic magazine would be full of wristwatches. Among them, there were Swiss giants such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega. These ads were intelligently placed, as the articles inside often featured the men of the mountains, deserts and the deep seas who also wore these brands proudly. This had a great effect on a six-year-old, Haagen noted. This moment was the very stepping stone that led the path to Haagen’s immense passion for wristwatches.

Fast forward to this day, Haagen is a seasoned collector with a collection of wristwatches that most people could only dream of. Of course, we had to ask if there is a single watch that is Haagen's overall favourite? The answer is a Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3700, the very watch that caught Haagen’s eye in the National Geographic magazines of the 1970s. The watch is a true icon designed by Geráld Genta in 1976 and was a revolutionary watch for Patek Philippe. The company which traditionally mainly made dress and pocket watches now had a true steel sports watch in its collection, which went on to become the watchmaker's most popular model.

Haagen is a man of exquisite style and taste, who always look on point. People who have followed Haagen’s journey in horology would have noticed a distinctive taste in eyewear. Since around 2005, Haagen has been wearing larger and predominantly black frames. Inspired by the Vietnam-era movies, Haagen saw many actors would were large black frames, that seemed to just keep wearing great. At Breakfast with Cloos, Haagen was wearing the Cloos X Brady Noire that perfectly fit this criterion.

This idea of influencing is a concept that can be applied in many instances. Haagen bought his first IWC watch because he saw it on the wrist of the American actor, John Malkovich. ‘’He was a cool cat, and seeing him in a crisp white shirt with an IWC big pilot on top of the cuff made an impact’’. With reference to the power of influencing, Haagen mentions that Tom Brady is a current IWC ambassador and of course a part of the Cloos family. ‘’This is true influencing’’ - Haagen notes.
